Have you ever wondered why people wish each other a Happy New Year? What if your 2017 wasn’t a very good one? How can you really have a Happy 2018?
Well, I think it’s possible to not only have a happy 2018 but also to have a new you by Friday. Yes, that’s right. Give yourself one week, and put yourself on the path to a new and better you. Let’s see how we can do that.
Sunday: Rest, Relax, and Restore
Sundays really are for resting, relaxing, and restoring your body. Unless you have a job where you have to work on Sundays, I believe (regardless of your religion) that you should protect this day as much as possible.
You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but on the seventh day you must stop working, even during the seasons of plowing and harvest. – Exodus 34:21 NLT
Now, whether you agree with the Bible or not, I think you’d have to agree that you are not meant to keep going seven days a week. You need not only nightly rest but also weekly rest.
So, your challenge for this coming Sunday is to do just that: REST.
Monday: 3…2…1…Blast Off!
Okay, if you have rested like you need to on Sunday, then Monday is your day to think like a rocket and blast off! Yes, blast off into your morning by waking up with plenty of time to get yourself ready for the day and do whatever your family needs.
Treat Mondays as if they are like a rocket launcher for your week. You’ve been resting and refueling, so you are ready to go!
You may be thinking, but I hate my job! And you may, in fact, hate it, but that’s not an excuse if you are striving to become a better person by Friday. Work in your job like you never have before.
Show up on time. Be positive. Be encouraging. Look for ways to make a difference.
Tuesday: Take a Lunch Break and Journal
So, now that you’ve made it to Tuesday, make sure you bring a pen and paper with you on your lunch break. I want you to start the practice of journaling just a few things each day.
Journaling is a great way to not only recap your thoughts and ideas but also to problem solve and get creative. I have found that I can go back to my journal and find inspiration in what I was learning in that particular season of my life.
So, get out the old pen and paper, and get to journaling!
Wednesday: Devote 1 Hour to Meditation
Call it prayer, meditation, deep-breathing, etc. I want you to spend 1 uninterrupted hour in meditation. If this means you need to rise earlier than normal on Wednesday, do just that.
When you’re a kid, you lay in the grass and watch the clouds going over, and you literally don’t have a thought in your mind. It’s purely meditation. – Dick Van Dyke
I find that I best meditate when I can take a good walk outside if the weather permits. It’s in walking that I do my best thinking, praying, and analyzing.
So, find a quiet spot, go for a walk, or just lay in bed and breathe. You’ll find you become more relaxed and your stress level reduces.
Thursday: Wake up 30 Minutes Earlier
Thursday is the day you need to wake up 30 minutes earlier than normal, just because you should do it!
Why? Our bodies get so comfortable with routines and habits, that we need to break it up if we want to have a new you by Friday and beyond.
You choose what you want to do when you wake up, but I suggest spending time reading, writing, or enjoying a favorite pastime like a jigsaw puzzle or sketching.
The goal on Thursday is to wake up your brain. You’ll be surprised at how your day goes differently because you’ve given yourself an extra 30 minutes.
Friday: Cash In
Friday is all about cashing in! Pretend that it is payday at work (and if it really is then celebrate!).
Not only have you had a great week of taking time out for yourself, paying attention to your surroundings, and shaking up your routine but also you have begun the process of rewiring your body and brain.
In John Arden’s book Rewire Your Brain, he sets forth the idea that we can literally think our way to a better life. And that’s exactly what I want you to do.
Think of yourself having achieved the success you so greatly desire this year. What is it that you really want to accomplish? Do you want to write a book? Go on a family vacation to Disney World? Get that next promotion at your job?
Whatever it is that you want, cash in and start picturing yourself doing the very thing! You’ll find that if you can start to visualize and see it that then you can take the action steps to achieve it. Will it happen this year? I don’t know, but I know if you don’t do anything it certainly will never happen.
Don’t leave your life up to chance. You can have a new you by Friday and for the rest of this year. Now, get up and get a better you!
Oh, and you may be wondering what to do on Saturday? Well, I’ll leave that up to you, but I would treat it as a day to get your house in order, spend time with family and friends, and prepare for the next week. You can do it!
Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take. -Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT
