How to Be Happy in 20 Minutes or Less

Are you angry all the time?  Have you ever felt that even a little slice of happiness never lasts long enough? Do you say to yourself, “I just want to be happy!”?

Well, if you answered yes to those questions, this blog post is for you.  Let’s look at 10 actions you can take any time you are feeling down and depressed.  This list is not exhaustive, but rather, it is a place to start when you want to be happy again.

These 10 actions are: easy, doable, repeatable, fun, and effective.

#1: Count your blessings.

When was the last time you actually counted your blessings?  If you live in the United States, have a full-time job, live in a house, drive a car, go on vacations, and go out to eat, and have a loving family, you are blessed!

#2: Do something for someone else.

One of the quickest ways to be happy is to immediately serve someone else.  The specific service is not important.  All that matters is that you take action and help another person.

#3: Love one another.

There are many ways to love each other.  Buy a gift.  Spend time with a friend.  Cook a meal for a family with a newborn.  Write a sweet note and mail it.  And if you have a significant other, bring them in close, look them in the eyes, and tell them you love them!

#4: Watch or listen to comedy.

My favorite videos to watch when I want to be happy and have a good laugh are videos of pets, kids, and people falling down.  I also love a good “bad-lip reading” or nature voice over clip.  Here’s one that always makes me laugh.

#5: Control what you can and release the rest.

No one can be happy all the time.  If circumstances aren’t ideal for you, evaluate what is yours to control and what you need to release.  I even suggest to physically act as if you are holding something and then throw it out! It feels good to pretend you can get rid of it!

#6: Move, breathe, and smile.

When we are down and depressed, we may sit still for too long and physically feel sick.  So, get up.  Move around.  Take long, deep breaths, and smile.

#7: Get outside.

Nature has a way of increasing positives vibes as I like to call them.  I’m not a scientist, but I know that when I get outside, take a walk, breathe in the fresh air, and look at the blue sky and the trees I feel better. If you want to be happy, try going outside.

#8: Take a nap.

A nap, you say?  Yes! A quick 15-20 minute power nap may be the key to rebooting your body.  I am not able to take a nap as much as I’d like, but this technique works well for me.  I often feel refreshed and ready to get back to work after a quick nap.

#9: Engage in your favorite hobby.

Movies? Music? Baking?  What’s your favorite hobby?  If you want to be happy, do something you love to do!  Even if you don’t “feel like it”, force yourself to do it anyway.

#10: Pray and meditate.

Last but certainly not least, take time to pray and meditate.  Life is too short to carry burdens with us everywhere.  If you want to be happy, pray and meditate.  Ask God to lift your worries.  Give your concerns to Him.  See if He may be teaching you something you couldn’t see in the moment.

So, pick two or three of these actions this week and see how they can uplift your spirit.  Don’t let another day, week, or month go by in disgust and depression.  Take action and be happy today!
