Have you ever wanted to be your own boss? What if I told you that you needed to start by cleaning your kitchen sink? Crazy, you say? Maybe not.
So many times in our lives we want to start something big, something huge, something that will define us and make us known in the world, but we don’t know where to start. I suggest we start by cleaning the kitchen sink, and here are a few reasons why.
Reason #1 : Because we need to develop a consistent, positive habit.
If you have ever tried to be your own boss, you no doubt have run into many obstacles. There are numerous tasks that must be done in order to generate an income that actually makes it worth continuing. You are busy, right? So, how are you going to accomplish everything in your normal job plus be your own boss on the side?
What I like to suggest to my coaching clients is to take action every day in an area that is unrelated to their business – such as, cleaning their kitchen sink. For you, it may be taking out the trash daily.
The specific activity is not as important as the development of a daily, consistent new habit. When we force ourselves to complete a task every day, we give ourselves the control needed to then pursue other things, like starting a business.
If we cannot manage a simple task daily (like cleaning the kitchen sink), then we cannot expect to effectively manage our own business one day.
Reason #2 : Because we need to have small, daily wins.
Are you faced with so many choices and tasks that you feel empty, overwhelmed, and tempted to just give up and quit? If that describes you, clean your kitchen sink and check that off your list every day as a win!
Imagine I told you to climb to the top of a large tree, and you will find a winning lottery ticket worth $1,000,000. All you have to do is climb to the top and it’s yours! There’s only one problem, the tree is covered with briars and vines – making it near impossible to climb.
What would you do? If you were anything like me, I’d find the quickest way to move one step closer toward my prize. I would call my family and purchase the tools to get up that tree or cut it down!
If your dream seems impossible to reach, take immediate action where you can, and see how you move closer to your ultimate goal of being your own boss.
Reason #3 : Because the sink is dirty and needs to be cleaned!
Let’s face it, there will always be things that just need to be cleaned because they have to be! Even if you find the perfect business that fits you just right, there will still be items that you will not want to do!
Just because you are on a journey to become your own boss, that doesn’t mean that everything will be enjoyable. But guess what?
If a task is necessary in your business, you must do it or pay someone to do it for you!
There are no shortcuts around this reason. If it’s dirty, clean it. If it’s messy, organize it. And if it’s necessary, by all means find a way to get it done.
I hope these tips have helped you to see the importance of finding one thing right now that you can control in your life. What do you have that needs to be cleaned? What task have you been putting off because it’s messy and seems too cumbersome?
Just do it. Take 10 minutes and clean the sink.
Keep at it consistently, and you will be well on your way to developing the successful habits that will allow you to be your own boss one day.
