Did you know that most trees are smarter than you and me? No, trees don’t have brains, but let’s take a look at why they are smarter and what we can learn from them.
1. Trees have DEEP ROOTS.
When you see a giant maple or oak tree, do you ever stop and think of what its roots must look like?
Most of us probably just appreciate the beautiful leaves and shade the trees provide on hot, summer day.
In truth, the root structure of trees is almost a mirror image of what is seen above ground. Trees must expand their roots deep into the ground and spread out to maintain and support what is visible.
In the most extreme conditions, roots will even grow tiny “hairs” that are small enough to absorb any sort of water that is found in the earth to sustain its life.
What about you? Do you focus more on the growth that everyone sees or the growth that is deep inside you?
2. Trees always go through SEASONS.
Deciduous trees have the most visible signs of the seasons. Right now, it’s still summer, so the trees have their various shades of green leaves providing shade to the ground below.
In the fall, the days grow shorter, and the leaves turn from green to a myriad of oranges, reds, and yellows.
Eventually, the leaves die and fall off the tree completely, leaving the trees and branches completely exposed to the winter to come.
Winter is a time of hibernation and what appears to be scarcity.
But then comes Spring. The days are longer, the buds that have been dormant burst forth and produce flowers, leaves, and fruits.
Our lives will always go through seasons, always. You may be in winter, but spring is coming. Hold on.
3. Trees grow PATIENTLY.
There is no short path to maturity if you are a tree. Years of plenty and lean must pass before a tree is even considered mature.
You see, trees are smarter because they are patient. They know there are no shortcuts.
It is so tempting to look at where others are in life and think, “I wish I was there!” No one just woke up and arrived one day. They spent much time getting to their current level of success.
Let’s make sure we stay patient as we stretch for our own successes.
4. Trees START SMALL.
Every tree begins with a tiny seed of opportunity. Not every seed makes it, but if it can get deep enough in the ground to take root, the possibilities are endless.
Let me give you a word of encouragement if you feel that your seed of opportunity is going nowhere. There are seeds that stay dormant under ground until conditions are right, and then they grow!
Don’t give up and despair if you are still small. Maybe the conditions just aren’t right for you yet. Stay at it, and wait!
5. Trees are ADAPTABLE.
Trees are amazing! They can adapt to all sorts of weather, ground conditions, droughts, and floods and still make it.
Trees are smarter because they adapt when necessary to survive. We need to be careful to not be afraid of difficulties and instead learn to adapt as we move forward anyway.
If you know the path to victory and a boulder is suddenly in your way, go around it, over it, under it or through it.
Adapt and find a way forward anyway!
So, if you are discouraged in your life right now, look to the trees. Wonder at their beauty. Think about how long it has taken them to get to their height and strength.
Be encouraged that you too can grow and achieve great things. God did not give you dreams and desires for nothing.
The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. – Psalms 37:23 NLT
