Stressed out to the maximum? Feeling overwhelmed?
That’s how most people describe themselves today….busy, busy busy! We walk around with this badge of busyness all day and say there’s just too much to do!
The good news is, there is a solution. Stop taking on more than you can handle by using these 5 keys to unlock more margin in your life.
Key #1: Create a map of your current situation.
Have you ever been to a rest area on a long trip and seen a map that usually has a star or a dot on it with the words in the large script saying “YOU ARE HERE.”? The purpose of this map is to give you a reference point so that you know where to begin and identify your surroundings.
Without an initial reference point and assessment, it is difficult to know which direction to go.
In addition, make sure to take inventory in these areas: your health, finances, family dynamics, spiritual disciplines, personal development, social interactions, and career goals. You may be making too many withdrawals from any one of these areas causing stress.
In order to unlock your time freedom, make sure you have a grasp of where you are currently.
Key #2: Decide what you want your future to look like.
Where do you want to be in the next 5 years? If you don’t think about it and set a goal, then your next 5 years are going to look almost exactly like your last 5.
If you don’t want to just repeat them, write down at least one goal in the 7 areas listed in Key #1. Do you want to lose 20 pounds? Change jobs? Start a business? Go on more family vacations?
Remember, if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail.
Key #3: Make immediate changes where possible.
Having a list of goals is extremely important, but taking immediate action will help to provide some relief. In your current career, can you cut back 10% on the hours you put in? Delegate work that could be done by others and schedule some time off as soon as possible.
You are no good to your family, friends, and colleagues if you cannot take time for yourself.
If you are serious about unlocking more time freedom, you must learn to say no to things, even if they are great.
Key #4: Remain flexible during any transitions.
Life will never be consistent. There will always be ups and downs no matter if you are just coasting through or making serious changes to have a better future. Flexibility is an important key to unlocking more time.
Chances are you may decide to commit to 1-2 hours per night working on your side hustle. So, what do you do when your kid demands your attention while you are working or when your wife’s car breaks down? You stop and listen to your kid. You go and rescue your wife.
If you reach the top and your family isn’t there with you to celebrate, was it really worth it?
Key #5: Stay consistent with your goals and desired direction.
Tony Robbins has said, “It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives but what we do consistently.” I believe that it is better to spend 5 focused minutes on one desired goal every day than to spend 5 hours working on a goal one day and not touch it again for a week.
If you are committed to unlocking time freedom in your life, you must remain true to your goals. Don’t fall into the temptation to start overbooking your life, but if you do, give yourself immediate grace and start again.
Grab one of these keys and start unlocking your better future now!
